Lymphedema Management Program
Lymphedema is an abnormal accumulation of protein-rich fluid under your skin. The body’s lymphatic system, when working normally, acts like a waste removal system, eliminating this fluid. This system also helps to fight infection. When your lymphatic system is disrupted, fluid can “back up,” causing swelling in the arms, legs, head, neck, or trunk.
Lymphedema Management and treatment include:
- Skin integrity and care
- Stretching and tissue mobilization
- Sequential pump use (traditional sequential pump such as Lymphapress or Biocompression,)
- Manual lymphatic drainage
- Exercise and functional activity
- Healthy Living including sleep hygiene, food selection, posture/positioning, and instruction in risk reduction principles.
- Bandaging
- Instruction in self-management techniques
What are the goals of the program?
Through various treatment options, the Lymphedema Management Program will help control swelling and other problems caused by lymphedema, helping patients to continue activities of daily living by:
Teaching patients how to self-manage swelling.
Decreasing pain.
Educating patients and others about ways to prevent and care for lymphedema; and
Improving mobility and use of the limb with lymphedema.
Reducing swelling.
Improving general awareness of lymphedema so that persons affected can receive more timely diagnosis and treatment.
Who is part of the care team?
The Lymphedema Management Program is offered by a specially trained Physiotherapist who has been educated in the areas of lymphedema treatment and Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT). Following the initial evaluation, our Physiotherapist will work with the patient to create a customized treatment plan while adhering to the self-management philosophy.
